How Often Should You Check Tyre Pressure?

Most of us assume that your cars pretty much take care of themselves.  We know to check your cars oil and take them to a mechanic for an oil change or perhaps a tune-up, but the rest is self-maintained, right?  Wrong, actually.  One of those often-forgotten details is tyre pressure.  Tyres are not self-maintained and do need owners to keep a close eye on them to ensure that they are properly maintained.

Why is tyre pressure important?

The pressure within your tyres is what keeps them in proper working order.  Under-Inflated tires can create premature wearing in the treads which will not only cause you to replace your tyres faster, but could also be slowing down your rolling power, meaning you spend more money lost at the petrol pumps.

Over-inflated tyres will create less traction with the roadway and can lead to poor braking distance as well as excess slipping on uneven surfaces.  They will also wear your tyres faster an in uneven spots versus proper tyre inflation.

Not only are under and over inflated tyres going to cost you more at the pumps as well as a tyre shop, you also could be putting yourself at risk.  Tires that are not inflated properly means that your vehicle is not at its best.  Less traction with roadways, poorer stopping distances, difficulty steering are all issues that can lead to a collision or a single-car accident. How often should you check your tyre pressure?

Now that you know all about the potential dangers of improperly inflated tyres, let’s take a moment and learn about how to avoid these.

The general rule of thumb for proper tyre monitoring is every two weeks.

Since tyres can lose their pressure in the span of a month, manually checking the pressure every two weeks you can catch an issue before it gets too far, safety-wise.

You should also check your tyre pressure if you notice any abnormalities with your treads.  Worn treads either on the inside or the outside of the tyre mean that you could have an issue, so keep an eye out for those signs, too.

You can check your pressure by heading to your local petrol station.  Most have either free tyre pressure checks or ones for a small fee.  This will help you to check you pressure (you’ll find your car’s preferred pressure in your manual or often on the driver’s side door) and also release or increase pressure as needed to keep it within that healthy range.

If you prefer, you can also buy an at-home testing kit that you simply monitor at home.  This is helpful if you do not live near a petrol station or you like the convenience of doing it on your own time.

Your tyre pressure is more important than most car owners know.  Learning the dangers as well as how often to check it enables you to do your part in keeping your tyres, vehicle, and wellbeing protected! If you have any questions you can let us know here.
